Jimmy “Jim” Dow Price, 87, of Decatur, Ind, passed away surrounded by family after a long battle with COPD on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021, at Adams Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 29, 1933, in Adams County, Indiana to the late Roy L. and Margaret A. (Hudson) Price. On April 28, 1962, he married Ruth Ann Wiegmann. She preceded him in death on July 26, 2015.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Decatur, where he served on various committees. He also served as an usher and greeter for many years.
Jim was a farmer and owner of Roy L. Price & Sons. He was a graduate of Pleasant Mills High School where he played on the basketball team. Jim survived polio as a child. He was featured in a podcast by his granddaughter, Krista (Miller) McElhatten, at ABC21 WPTA about his recovery from the polio virus. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of First State Bank of Decatur and the Adams County Community Foundation.
Jim served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954 and was a member of American Legion Post 43 in Decatur. In 2019 he participated in one of the Northeast Indiana Honor Flights.
Jim was an avid and lifelong fan of Purdue football and basketball. His favorite pastime was doing a “crop report” from Anderson, Ind. (Hoosier Park Casino).
He is survived by three daughters, Susan A. (Adam) Miller of Decatur, Kathleen Kay Price of Glencoe, Ill. and Nancy C. (Phil) Hammerstrom of Middletown, Ind.; three granddaughters, Krista (Brien) McElhatten of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Jacqui Banks and Allie Banks of Madison, Wis.; one great-granddaughter, Millie McElhatten; Ruth’s sister, Carolyn Sappenfield (husband, Bill Ellison). He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Bryan J. Miller, on Jan. 3, 2006; and two brothers, Jerry K. Price and Danny C. Price.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at Haggard-Sefton- Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at First United Methodist Church, with calling one hour prior from 10-11 a.m. Officiating will be Pastor Harold Klinker and Pastor Steve Austin. Burial will be held in Decatur Cemetery.
