Richard C. Garner, 93, of Riverview. Fl. passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2017. He was born Feb. 17, 1924 in Decatur, IN to Arthur (Bud) and Clarissa Garner. He was married for 72 years to Mary Ellen Parrish who preceded him in death in 2015.
He served as a US Army sergeant and platoon leader in Company C, 1st Battalion, 313th Infantry Regiment of the 79th Infantry Division in Europe during WWII. After his military service, he worked as a meat cutter for the Kroger Company and left in 1971 as a Zone Manager. He moved to Florida and became a Vice President for Munford Majik Markets. Upon retirement from Munford in 1986, he became a realtor in Brandon for the Bob Sands Prudential Co. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite at the Summit City Lodge #170 in Ft. Wayne, IN since 1963. He was an active member of Egypt Shriners in Tampa, and a member of the American Legion North Webster Post #253. Dick was an avid golfer throughout his lifetime.
He is survived by daughter Jayne (Don) Hickman of Kendallville, IN; son Brad (Mary) Garner of Oviedo, FL, and daughter-in-law Beth Garner of Huntersville, NC. He is also survived by grandchildren Rhonda Lennon, Tanya Knutson, Seth Garner, Johnna Cameron, Karah Hickman, Emmalee Garner, and six great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his siblings Mary Kay Mertens, Jack Garner, and Annie Didrick; and sons Alan Garner and Steve Garner.
Visitation will be on Friday, December 29, 2017 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home in Decatur, IN. from 11am – 1:00 PM, a memorial service will follow with Rev. Tom Watt officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Shriners Children’s Hospital are preferred.
