Peter Philip “Pete” Grandstaff, 85, of Decatur, IN passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Adams Woodcrest. Peter was born on September 3, 1932 in Milwaukee, WI to the late Francis and Faith (Byerly) Grandstaff. His paternal grandfather, John C. Grandstaff, was a well-known doctor in Preble in the early 1900s. Pete’s maternal grandfather, Jesse S. Byerly, and uncle, Daniel M. Byerly, were early pastors of the Pleasant Dale Church of the Brethren southwest of Decatur.
Pete attended Northside H.S. in Fort Wayne and Columbia City H.S. He served his country in the US Navy from 1950-1965 and 1967-1972. His specialty was Electronic Counter Measures and he flew on P2V and P3V planes. He also served aboard the USS Randolph (CVA15) and the USS Kenneth Whiting (AV-14). His Navy decorations included the following: National Defense Service Medal (1 star), Vietnam Service Medal (1 star), Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Air Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation and Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award). As a Midshipman, he sang in the Navy choir. He loved music and quiet peaceful places. Pete was a courier for various firms in the Fort Wayne area delivering items throughout Indiana. After his retirement, Pete volunteered at the Whitley County Human Society Animal Shelter.
He is survived by several cousins spread over the United States.
A Graveside service will be held at a later date at the Pleasant Dale Cemetery.
