Virgil L. Bixler, 101, of Decatur, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur. Virgil was born in Adams County, Indiana, on October 13, 1920, the son of the late John B. and Lovina (Flory) Bixler. On March 12, 1941, he married Garnett Maxine Herman, she preceded him in death on September 24, 1987.
He was a former member of Decatur Missionary Church. Virgil proudly served his country in the United States Army, during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post #43.
Virgil worked at Central Soya for 41 years and retired in 1982.
He is survived by his son, Roger L. Bixler of Decatur; a daughter, Betty Bixler of Decatur; a son in law, Richard Schwartz of Decatur; a sister, Marjorie Zimmerman of Berne; 6 grandchildren, Roger Bixler Jr., Nina (Kip) Pancake, Rodney (Missy) Bixler, Stephanie (Scott) Cox, Steven Schwartz, Sara Hart; 5 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren.
Virgil was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Garnett Bixler; a daughter, Janice Schwartz; 4 brothers, Clifford Bixler, Dale Bixler, Glen Bixler and Roy Bixler; 4 sisters, Frances Moser, Orpha Spahr, Sylvia Hanni and Nellie Idlewine.
Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, January 17, 2022, at Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with visitation an hour prior from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Rev. Henry Favorite will be officiating.
Burial will follow the service, in the Decatur Cemetery, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the American Legion Post #43.
Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post #43 or Northeast Indiana Honor Flight.
