Thomas B. Oliver, 75, of Ohio City, OH, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2022, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. Tom was born in Berne, Indiana on March 1, 1947, to the late Frederick Thames “Fritz” and Marlene (Townsend) Oliver. On June 9, 1984, Tom married Joyce S. Cowens.
Tom served his country as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and did a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Post 508 in Rockford.
He attended the Olive Branch Church of God in Rockford. Tom was a member of the Willshire Sportsman’s Club and the St. Mary’s Bluecreek Conservation Club. He was also an avid golfer and was a member of the Hickory Sticks Golf Club and loved playing at many different courses.
Tom was the owner and operator, along with his wife Joyce of TJ’s Grocerette in Geneva, Rockford, and Willshire until he retired, and they sold the business in 2018.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Joyce S. Oliver of Ohio City, OH; 2 sons, Troy (Nicky) Oliver of Chickamauga, GA and Tyler (Taylor) Oliver of Berne, IN; 2 daughters, Shelley (Brian) Moorman and Mandy (Josh) Harkless both of Decatur, IN; a sister, Lynda Hunt of Fort Wayne, IN; 13 grandchildren, Derek (Sylvia) Roop, Lexi (Adam) Hagen, Chase (Jade) Roop, Braxton (Angelica) Roop, Emily and Madison Moorman, McCade Harner, Trever (Carli) Oliver, Kaelynn Oliver, Jaxon Harkless, Grant Harkless, Blakeley Oliver, Wrenley Oliver; 4 great grandchildren, Karver Roop, Dex Harner, Hadley Oliver, Walker Daniel and 2 on the way.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Thursday, July 28, 2022, from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home in Decatur, IN.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 29, 2022, also at the funeral home with calling 1 hour prior to the service from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Chaplain Juan Loredo will be officiating, and burial will immediately follow in M.R.E. Cemetery, Berne. Military Honors and Graveside Rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 43 Color Guard.
