Bess M. Hottell, 83, of Decatur, passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at Adams Heritage in Fort Wayne. She was born in Carroll County, KY, on January 30, 1937, the daughter of the late William Thomas and Ethelene (Hamilton) Baker. On June 16, 1961, she married Dr. John David Hottell, he preceded her in death on January 5, 2014.
She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church and enjoyed a 40 plus year career in Mary Kay Cosmetics, as a Senior Sales Director. Bess also assisted John in his veterinary practice early on in their marriage.
She was the second oldest of five children, raised on a Tobacco Farm and a Dairy Farm in which they milked the cows by hand, in Northern Kentucky. Bess made biscuits and gravy from scratch, every morning for her family at the age of twelve. Bess loved teaching her kids how to cook and bake, even if it meant chocolate cake batter on the kitchen ceiling.
Bess is survived by her son, Scott David (Lisa “Peters”) Hottell of Westfield, IN; 2 daughters, Angie (Ralph) Zander of Decatur, Beth Ann (Pete) Herber of Decatur; 1 sister, Erma Dougherty of Indianapolis, IN; a grandson, Nolan David Hottell; 2 granddaughters, Samantha and Jessica Herber.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Dr. John David Hottell; 2 brothers, Ossie Thomas Baker and Wallace Ray Baker; 1 sister Virginia Ruth Duncan.
Due to Covid-19 concerns, a private ceremony for immediate family was held.
Memorials may be made to Bess’ favorite causes, the Adams County Crisis Center, Leader Dogs for the Blind, or Disabled American Veterans.
