Obituary

Bernadette A. “Peggy” Lengerich, 91, of Decatur, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021, at Adams Heritage in Monroeville. She was born in Adams County, IN, on June 4, 1930, the daughter of the late Frank R. and Bertha A. (Kintz) Braun. On June 18, 1949, she married William H. Lengerich and he preceded her in death on April 8, 2006.

She was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Women of St. Mary’s. She worked as a homemaker and was also a Health Care Provider, employed at Adams County Memorial Hospital. Peggy was a compassionate person and enjoyed helping others who were suffering.

As a young lady she was taken in by the William & Patricia Gass Family and she was raised like one of their own children.

She is survived by 3 sons, Steven L. (Cindy) Lengerich of Monroeville, P Scott (DeeAnn) Lengerich of Decatur, William M. “BJ” (Jeanna) Lengerich of Fort Wayne; 2 daughters, Patricia M. Smith and Juliann M. (Tom) Darling both of Decatur; 2 sisters, Jeanette Loshe of Decatur and Rita Young of New Haven; 16 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

Bernadette was preceded in death by a son, Timothy W. Lengerich, a son-in-law, Stephen L. Smith, 5 brothers, a sister, a step brother, and a step sister.

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 3:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2021 in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with calling 1 hour prior from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Father David Ruppert, Father Jose Panamattathil, VC, and Deacon Mark Hellinger will be presiding. Burial will immediately follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School or to the Hope Clinic.
