Ruth Lorraine (Hess) Smith, 90, of Decatur, IN, died on January 9, 2019 at CHP Inpatient Hospice Center in Van Wert, OH. She was born on May 01, 1928 in Decatur, IN the daughter of the late Harold and Margaret (Hirshey) Hess. She married Gerald Verlin Smith on May 10, 1947 and he passed away on October 9, 2009 after 62 years together.
She retired in 1985 from Eagle-Picher Plastics in Grabill. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, playing cards, and bingo. She especially enjoyed the 15 years she rode with her husband in the sawdust delivery truck he drove for his son-in-law.
Ruth loved her husband and her family above all else. She looked forward to the yearly family vacations, where they would go camping and ride horses in Brown County.
She is survived by 2 sons, Gary (Janet) Smith and Dean (Julia) Smith, 3 daughters, Shirley (Ray) Scott, Diane (Larry) Irwin, and Julie (Ron) Becher; 9 grandchildren, Jamie (Celia) Horne, Eric (Stacey) Smith, Landon Smith, Nick (Lindsey) Irwin, Ryan (Holly) Becher, Cole (Cassie) Becher, Joshua (Kary) Smith, Alisa (Nick) Miller, and Melissa (Thomas) McCullough; 21 great-grandchildren, Paige (Kyle) Ehret, R.J. and Ian Smith, Gabriel Smith, Corbin, Ivy, Talon, Duncan, and Oakley Becher, Jackson, Mavrick, Grady and Brantlee Becher, Addilyn and Molly Irwin, Avienda and Charlie Miller, and Tori Jane, Tyden, Madex and Maize McCullough; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, Tatum and Landon Ehret. She was also like a “grandmother” to Marcus Miller.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by great-grandsons, twins Alexander and Dexter McCullough, and by Matthew Miller, who was like a grandson to her; 3 sisters, Kathryn Evans, Mary Bailey, and Frances Stevens, and a brother Rubin (Bud) Hess.
Visitation will be from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Haggard-Sefton-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home, Decatur, IN.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church with calling 1 hour prior to the service from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Pastor James Voorman will be officiating and burial will take place in the Decatur Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the ACSPCA (Allen County Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) or CHP Van Wert Inpatient Hospice.
