John H. Mahlan, 82, of Decatur, Indiana passed away on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Swiss Village Nursing Home located in Berne. John was born on March 9, 1935 in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Henry C. and Stella (Hockemeyer) Mahlan. John was united in marriage with Phyllis (Hopkins) Mahlan on March 19, 1955 and she preceded him in death on June 14, 2002.
John was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen, the Decatur Lions Club, American Legion Post #43 and the Color Guard. John was employed with International Harvester from 1964 to 1983 and then with General Motors as a millwright from 1984 to 1998 when he retired.
Surviving him is daughter, Toni Frisinger of Decatur; 2 sons, Chris (Robyn) Mahlan of Hoagland and David (Nancy) Mahlan of Decatur; Daughter-In-Law, Cheryl Mahlan of Decatur; sister, Sue (Larry) Grotrian of Ft. Wayne; Brother- In-Law, Norm Steury of Decatur; 2 Sister- In- Laws: Sandy (Bob) McNary of Syracuse, IN and Gloria (Roger) Hopkins of Roann, IN; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Mahlan; son, Kevin Mahlan; and sister, Patricia Steury.
Visitation will be on Friday, November 3, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Haggard- Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home and Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen
The Funeral Service will held be on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen with Rev. Peter Brock officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 43 Color Guard.
