Jean M. Bower, 96, Maumelle, Arkansas, passed away Feb. 8, 2018, at Stonehaven Assisted Living Community, where she had lived the past 2.5 years. She was born in Akron, Ohio, May 3, 1921, to Vernon P. and Adrian (Sanders) Hilbish.
She graduated from North Canton High School in Canton, Ohio, and attended Heidelberg College in Tiffen, Ohio, majoring in piano performance. Jean was co-owner with her husband, Ferris Bower, of Ferris Bower Jeweler. She was a well-known piano teacher in Decatur for 40 years and shared her musical talent by serving as organist and pianist in many churches, funeral homes and musical performances in Ohio and Decatur. Before moving to Arkansas in 2000, Jean was active in the Decatur community and belonged to Zion United Church of Christ, Decatur Women's Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Chairman of Adams County American Red Cross Blood Drive.
Among survivors are her daughter, Judy (Edwin) Knouse of Maumelle; grandchildren, Jodi (Jeff) Shotts Bruner of Dublin, Ohio, Matt (Rhonda) Shotts of Fort Wayne and Ryan (Melissa) Shotts of Fort Wayne; and great-grandchildren, Alex and Erin Bruner, and Evan, Andrew, Rylee, Hanna, Hunter and Greyson Shotts. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brother, Robert D. Hilbish.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. May 19 at Decatur Cemetery.
